Many pets need a miracle s Know how to report suspected animal abuse

Print Comment
After being chained to a tree and living off horse manure, the two blue heeler-mix dogs rescued from a junkyard south of Evans earlier this month are back on the road to good health and have been adopted out -- together -- from the Humane Society of Weld County.

Near death when they arrived at the Humane Society, they are now spry and healthy. They've been called the "miracle dogs," but most miracles need a little assistance.

The two abused dogs have many humans to thank for their rescue and recovery: the neighbors who reported the abuse to the Weld County Animal Control officers, the officers who released the dogs and got them help, the workers and veterinarians at the Humane Society who got the dogs immediate medical attention and hand-fed them for several days and, of course, the new owner who adopted them.

It's a happy ending to what could have been another tragic animal-abuse story.

Unfortunately, not all stories end so well. Owners need to take responsibility for their pets, and neighbors, friends and passers-by need to report potential abuse to authorities.

We all have a bit of responsibility for this Weld County population that has no voice.

WHO TO CALL

* To report animal abuse, call Greeley Animal Control at 350-9600 or Weld County Animal Control at 356-4015.

* To adopt an animal or to make a monetary donation, contact the Humane Society of Weld County, 1620 42nd St. in Evans, or call at 506-9550.

* Animals are also available at Double J Pet Ranch, 14253 Colo. 392, Windsor, or call 352-5330. Double J is also in need of donations.
