Humane Society urges pet owners to be cautious on Fourth of July

Fido and Fluffy might be terrified of fireworks.

The Humane Society of Weld County is urging pet owners to be extra cautious with their pets during the night of the Fourth of July.

According to the Humane Society, July 5 is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters nationwide because many pets are highly fearful of fireworks and will stop at nothing to flee from the loud noises and bright lights.

Some animals will leap over fences, tear their leash or even break through a window to escape from what they perceive is a great danger.

The Humane Society has a few tips for pet owners who don't want their pet to run free on Independence Day:

First, keep your pet indoors and turn on the television or a radio to help mute the sound of fireworks and firecrackers.

Keep the information on your pet's collar up-to-date so that if your pet does escape you will be able make a quick identification at the shelter. Shelters are currently offering permanent identification microchips for $20.

If you will be away from home during the holiday, leave your pet at a boarding facility to insure your pet will be safety looked after.

Finally, consult a veterinarian about tranquilizers and at-home remedies if you believe your pet may have a great fear of fireworks.
