Nunn celebrates its history

Print Comment
Back in the late 1800's, a man named Tom Nunn lived near the railroad tracks in northern Weld County.

The area became a town and now, 100 years later, it's celebrating its anniversary during the Nunn Harvest Festival this weekend.

One day long ago, Tom Nunn flagged a train to stop after he discovered a bridge was on fire north of Pierce. The railroad company was so grateful for saving the train, they built him a house on his homestead and covered it with corrugated iron.

When the section foreman, John Peterson, heard the railroad was putting a railroad siding in the area, he suggested the town be called Nunn, in honor of Tom.

That's how the town got its name.

A memorial is happening at the Nunn Telephone Company at 9 a.m. today. The Drylanders Museum opens at 3 p.m. and a sloppy-Joe supper will begin at 5 p.m. After dinner, the entertainment is Fool's Night, a variety of short skits, at the Nunn Community Center.

Saturday's festivities begin with the pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Cook Shack. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. followed by the dedication of the Nunn Memorial Marker. The first "Nunnion Award," an award given to outstanding supporters of the town, will be presented to Todd Harding, Brian Gary and Susan Moore. Vendors, a mud volleyball tournament, horseshoe tournament, car show, antique tractor pull, vintage baseball game and a dance will all be in the park. Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m.

To end the weekend festivities, bring a chair at 9:15 a.m. for Sunday's church service in the park.
