As the results began to compile, polls in Weld County showed a strong favor of Republican candidate Scott Renfroe, who is vying against Democratic candidate Solomon Little Owl for Colorado Senate District 13.
The district, previously represented by term-limited Dave Owen, includes most of Weld County except the southwest portion.
"We're just excited that today is here and that people are here to vote," Renfroe said. "I'm looking forward to the future. We ran a good campaign, and I'm excited and confident."
This is the first time running for both candidates looking to enter the political arena.
"I'm down big, but they only counted about 12,000 of the votes, so we'll see what happens," Little Owl said. "Whether I win or lose, I'm still optimistic."
Since his victory in the August primary against veteran lawmaker Dale Hall, Renfroe made it well-known of his opposition to abortion and Referendum C, a voter-approved measure that suspended state spending limits for five years.
Little Owl was a proponent of Referendum C and has focused his campaign on education and health care.
Both said they'd work to create more water storage for northern Colorado.
