Residents ask officials to extend term limits

The committee examining term limit extensions will meet for the final time at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6 in the Weld County Attorney's office to decide on a recommendation to present to the Board of Weld County Commissioners
Many Weld County residents are asking officials to raise or get rid of term limits for some Weld elected officials.

At a meeting Monday night, many residents told a committee examining Weld's home-rule charter that term limits for some Weld offices don't make sense and that they want to see them changed.

Currently, state law sets limits for most local officials at two terms. The Weld offices affected by the limits are the assessor, the clerk and recorder, the sheriff and the district attorney.

Additionally, Weld commissioners and council members are limited to two terms by the home-rule charter.

State law allows that cities or counties that are home rule can set the term limits for these offices themselves.

Paul Branham, former Greeley Police Chief, said he is opposed to term limits.

"They're elected by the people," Branham said. "If they're not doing a good job, they should be voted out."

Branham added that he doesn't think there's political support for a removal of term limits so he proposed that the limits be raised to three terms instead of two.

Greeley resident Jim Hayward said having someone like a sheriff for more than two terms would increase the quality of work the sheriff's office does.

"Does it sterilize it? I don't think so," Hayward said. He added that losing the expertise of the officials just because they are term-limited would be a mistake.

Many speakers at the meeting proposed that limits be raised for offices such as sheriff and clerk and recorder but not for "policy makers" such as the Weld commissioners or Weld Council.

A ballot measure extending or removing term limits for some offices could be on the November ballot.

The committee examining the changes to the Weld home-rule charter will make a recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners on how to change term limits. The commissioners will then decide in mid-August if the proposal should be on the November ballot.
