Greeley City Council considering proposed tobacco sampling ban

The Greeley City Council will decide on a proposed tobacco free sampling ban tonight.

The council is expected to decide on a ban that would prohibit the free commercial distribution of tobacco products in Greeley. The council is meeting now in council chambers, 919 7th St.

Opponents of the ban say government shouldn't take choice out of the hands of the public while proponents insist a ban is necessary to protect the health of Greeley residents.

In addition, the Greeley Stampede Committee says it may lose a sponsorship from U.S. Smokeless Tobacco if the ban passes. U.S. Smokeless provides a scoreboard and manpower to run it to the Stampede as part of its sponsorship. Stampede officials say it could cost $200,000 to replace the scoreboard and operators if U.S. Smokeless pulls its sponsorship.

Denver and Boulder already have similar bans, but both the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo and the Cheyenne Frontier Days allow sampling at their events.
