Brush couple rescued near buttes

Print Comment
A Brush couple was rescued early Monday morning by a Weld County Public Works maintainer operator after getting stuck near the Pawnee Buttes the day before.

Margie Martinez, spokeswoman for the Weld sheriff's office, said Paul and Linda Feltz were found at 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Sunday's blowing wind pushed snow onto county roads, which still hadn't cleared by Monday morning in the northeastern part of Weld. On Monday morning, crews were still working to clear snow drifts in the Briggsdale, Grover and Hereford areas, according to Max Hill, who manned Weld County's snow desk Monday. All paved roads, he said, were in good condition.

Martinez said the couple got stuck on Weld County Road 104, about 20 miles northwest of New Raymer, at about noon Sunday, but they waited until 9 p.m. to call for help. However, Martinez said they did not know where they were. A sheriff's office was able to triangulate the couple's location from their cell phone and cell phone towers.

"It was lucky they had a cell phone to call for help," Martinez said.

A public works road grader operator from Ault drove to either Keota or New Raymer, Martinez said, where he was able to get a county maintainer and plow his way to the couple.

He then led the couple back to safety, and they returned to their Morgan County home. Neither was injured.

In Greeley, a crew of about 40 will work day and night to clear snow from roads, sidewalks, handicapped ramps and bus stops, said Jerry Pickett, street superintendent. Crews are blowing snow into yards and other areas that can hold it. They are not trucking it out.

"We're just getting it off the street," Pickett said. "This isn't going to melt. It'll be around for a while. It'll take days and days of 50-, 60-degree weather to melt this. But if we don't get it off the street, we'll have drainage problems."

So far, no major damage has been reported as a result of the high winds.

Fox 31 Weather meteorologist Erin Little forecast a rise in temperatures later this week.
