Suspicions were raised this week when reports came about the residents of a house in the 800 block of 30th Avenue Place, who were using too much kitty litter, saving large amounts of cold medications, and talking about making "Smurf" and "cotton candy."

The two benign names -- Smurf and cotton candy -- are forms of methamphetamines, according to search warrants from a drug bust Wednesday morning in west-central Greeley.

Weld County Drug Task Force and Greeley SWAT team officers entered the house shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday and arrested two residents:

* William Blaine Evans Jr., 20, charged with possession of methamphetamines, possession with intent to manufacture, child abuse and violation of a restraining order. Evans has a long record in Greeley with arrests for menacing, assault, illegal possession of a gun, possession of drug paraphernalia and numerous traffic violations.

* Kyndra Earley, 18, charged with possession of methamphetamines, possession with intent to manufacture and child abuse. Early also was arrested last year on charges of harassment.

The child abuse charges were filed because a 15-year-old boy was also in the house. A court affidavit stated police were tipped on the house by confidential informants who said they heard the two suspects talking about making meth, and that they had hidden their recipes for cooking the drug in a back bedroom. The couple also had bragged that they didn't have to get jobs because within a month they would be making money from selling the meth.

Police hit the house before dawn Wednesday, firing a "flash-bang" device through the front window. It is also called a sound-light diversion device because it makes a loud explosion noise and flashes a bright light that causes no damage but temporarily disorients a person. The two suspects were arrested without a struggle. Two others in the house -- the 15-year-old boy and a woman -- were questioned and released.

The search warrant for the raid Wednesday showed police arrested Evans last month for possession of a firearm by a previous felon and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was out on bond at the time of the Wednesday arrest.

Last Thursday, police were first tipped off that someone would be making methamphetamine in the house on 30th Avenue Place. A large bottle of hydrogen peroxide, several AA batteries that had been taken apart and a large amount of anhydrous ammonia were found inside the house. All are materials used in making meth, police said.

The kitty litter was mentioned in the search warrant, which cited that the couple was going through 5 pounds of litter per week but never changed their litter box. Greeley police spokesman Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said cat litter is used by meth makers to filter out the foul odors created by cooking the drug.
