Gov. Bill Ritter signs bill allowing Sunday liquor sales

Gov. Bill Ritter signed a bill allowing the Sunday sale of liquor in Colorado Monday afternoon making Colorado the 35th state to allow such sales.

The governor's signature means consumers will be able to buy alcoholic beverages on Sundays starting July 6.

Some liquor store owners were upset with the bill because for many Sunday is their only day of rest without having to hire additional help or work seven days a week to keep up with competition. Many were OK with the bill after a similar measure that would have allowed grocery stores to sell full-strength beer and wine was defeated in the legislature earlier in the year. Right now, the law limits grocery stores to selling only alcoholic beverages that are 3.2 alcohol by weight.

Proponents of the bill said the law was antiquated, and that consumers should have the choice to buy alcohol on any day they want.
