Marcella Stallings cried when my colleagues and I interviewed her on the campus of Vanderbilt University a few weeks ago.

Click here to watch watch video of Stallings tell her story.

We produced the video as part of the Chips Quinn Scholars program, which trains young minority journalists in the finer points of journalism. We were the first class to receive multimedia training. We received a baptism by fire.

The emotion was too much for Stallings; the memories of past wrongs perpetrated on her brought tears to her eyes. It was hard to watch, hard to edit, hard to post here now. It's deeply emotional, personal and effective.

Stallings told us about her art. How it helped her cope after she was raped as a child. How it helped her instead of the drugs she used when there was no one to turn to. She told us her art is therapy.

"God's given me a special gift, you know, and given me the ability to put soul in the eyes," Stallings told us.

It's powerful to read about Stallings, but it's even more powerful to hear Stallings tell her story herself. It's powerful to hear her cry and see the tears well up in her eyes. And it helps journalists tell a story that affects people with more than words.

The fact is, most people are visual. Journalists need to tell visual stories to really change things.

That's what we did with this video, and that's how journalism is changing. We're changing with it, and we're taking a stab at it.
