American Cancer Society to hold Asian benefit

Print Comment
Residents are invited to an Evening of Hope, Beauty and Peace Wednesday to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The event will feature Mirai Daiko, a Japanese drumming group from Denver, Japanese lanterns, origami cranes, and an Asian perspective on the topics of grieving and illness. The evening will be held to honor families touched by cancer.

"I have been part of the American Cancer Society for 12 years, and I have never been a part of an event that viewed hope and healing from a different cultural perspective," said Nancy Clark, the distinguished events director at the American Cancer Society. "I think that people assume that all cultures deal with the healing process in the same way, so it's nice to see a different outlook."

For a donation, origami cranes can be dedicated in honor or memory of a loved one. There also will be wine tasting and specialty foods.

The event honorees will be Sonny and Carol Jo Lubick, whose lives have been affected by cancer.

The event is hosted by Rita Gordon as a tribute to her Japanese heritage and her late husband, Dr. A. Lee Gordon, III.
