Greeley church groups will host a series of events to commemorate National Day of Prayer on Thursday.

This year, the focus of prayer will be on seven points of influence in America: government, military, media, business, education, church and family. This year's theme is "Prayer, America's Strength and Shield" from Psalm 28:7, which states: "The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped."

Starting off, people of all Christian faiths are invited for an observance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Weld County Centennial Center Plaza, at the corner of 9th Avenue and 9th Street. Luke Ham Sandwich Family Band will provide music and Jeff Hayes of the Navigators, a ministry in Colorado Springs, will be the guest speaker.

At 5 p.m., people will congregate for a prayer walk, starting at First Baptist Church, at the corner of 10th Avenue and 11th Street.

The prayer walk will conclude with a time of praise and prayer at First Baptist Church and that will be followed by a concert of prayer at 7 p.m.

The purpose of the National Day of Prayer is simple and clear, said Sandra Vigil, one of the organizers.

"To go to the almighty God in prayer," Vigil said. "That is the foundation and the ongoing foundation of our country, no matter who attempts to deny it. This year, Weld County is coming together, as Christians of all denominations in our country gather for the event."

More than 40 churches plan to participate in the day's events, Vigil said.

National Day of Prayer

The National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 1. It was designated by President Truman in 1952 and set on the first Thursday of May by President Regan in 1988.
