You can join more than 200 county and city employees on a walk during your lunch during National Walk Day Wednesday.

While I normally try to dodge publicity stunts like this one - all five county commissioners will be there! - I'm all for anything that encourages people to start exercising, even on something as simple as walking.

The event begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. and starts in many different locations. You can start it from anywhere. But you can end up near City Hall if you're downtown and the Workforce Training Center on the corner of 111th Avenue and "H" Street.

You want to hear something funny?

Well, funny if you're a runner. Probably not if you're a couch potato. Actually, you may not find this funny at all either way.

And with that, I'll tell you.

I'm more nervous about running one mile Wednesday than running a half marathon (13.1 miles for those of you playing at home or, heck, at work) Sunday.

This shows me three things:

* I prefer longer (i.e. slower) races to the fast, intense ones because, even though you're running longer and by the end you hurt more, you aren't ever as miserable as you are running a short race.

* I'm confident that I'll not only finish the half marathon this Sunday, I'll run a pretty good time, say 8:30-per-mile or below. But if I don't, hey, I've just run a half marathon, so that's pretty cool in its own right. Right? My race won't be defined by my time, like it will be in every other race this season, including the Bolder/Boulder.

* The mile just sucks. As fun as it is to see where you are, it's a pretty darn painful six minutes.
