Four expelled in Johnstown hazing investigation

Print Comment
JOHNSTOWN -- More than a month after a Roosevelt High School incident in which six students were accused of hazing other students in a sexually explicit manner, four students have been expelled.

Bill Hungenberg, assistant superintendent of the Johnstown/Millike Re-5J School District, said officials at that the school district have completed their investigation and expelled the four students for the remainder of the school year.

Hungenberg said one student was suspended for a week and another for a month. He would not elaborate on the investigation and its findings.

The hearings for the students involved were toward the end of March, Hungenberg said. The expelled students are in homebound education and will be permitted to return to school next year.

A separate investigation involving Delta's District Attorney's office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is still underway.

Myrl Serra, Delta DA, said he has not received any new information from CBI and that the investigation is still ongoing. Serra is unable to provide a timeline as to when the investigation may finish.

Lance Clem, public information officer with the CBI, confirmed the investigation is still underway, and said in a voicemail it is taking time to interview students.

The incident took place March 3 during a trip to Delta for a baseball tournament. CBI was brought in toward the end of March to work with the Johnstown Police Department, Delta County Sheriff's Office and the Seventh Judicial District Attorney District Attorney's office to investigate the allegations.
