Cigars cause fire in fraternity

Improperly discarded cigars were the cause of a fire that caused about $45,000 of damage to a fraternity house in the 1700 block of 8th Avenue in Greeley Saturday, said Lt. Bill Diershow with the Union Colony Fire/Rescue Authority.

The fire began about 4:09 in the back porch of the house.

No one was injured. It took about 25 firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

The fire started in the enclosed back porch of the three-story house and did some damage to the back of the building and contents.

The house was celebrating its 50th anniversary and had more than 100 guests. Cigars smoked for the anniversary weren't properly discarded and probably caught some paper or trash on fire, Diershow said.
