Wanted: A few good columnists

Print Comment
We know you are out there.

We even hear from you occasionally.

But we need a commitment.

The Tribune is looking for readers who are writers; those who are willing to stand up and let their views be published on our Weld Voices pages.

It is time once again for our In the Neighborhood columnist contest. We are seeking eight Weld County columnists who are willing to contribute regularly to our opinion pages.

These writers will be asked to submit a column, up to 600 words, once a month for a year, starting in July. Last year's In the Neighborhood columnists included a college professor, a former police officer and a retired health professional. The diverse group provided a regular, yet eclectic voice on our editorial pages.

We are looking for writers who can be clear and concise. Because these columns will appear on The Tribune's opinion page, they need to be opinionated. We want residents who can tackle issues and reflect the diverse palate of Weld County.

The contest is only open to Weld County residents. Previous In the Neighborhood columnists will not be considered. Contestants under the age of 18 must include a permission-for-publication statement from a parent or guardian.

If you think you are our new columnist, here's how to enter:

»Submit two commentaries, not more than 600 words each. Note at the top of the first page, "In the Neighborhood Contest." Include your full name, address, telephone number, a brief biographical statement and a photo.

»The tone of your entry is up to you, but you need to adhere to the Tribune's column policy: Include attribution of facts and sources used; do not be vague or write poetry or prose; avoid personal attacks and limit the use of secondary sources and quoted materials.

»All entries must be received at The Tribune by 5 p.m. May 30. Winners will be announced in The Tribune June 15.

»The Tribune Editorial Board will serve as final judges. We will base our decision on several criteria, including clarity, accuracy, pertinence to Weld County and a clear and unique writing style. Writers who are able to articulate a personal opinion are what we're looking for.

»All entries become the property of The Tribune and may be published regardless of "winning" status. Columns will be edited to comply with Tribune style, and for length.

»Entries can be submitted in person at 501 8th Ave., Greeley; by e-mail at letters@greeleytribune.com, subject line "In the Neighborhood Contest; or by fax at (970) 356-5780. Make sure you clearly indicate this of for the "In the Neighborhood Contest" on all entries.

We can't wait for those entries to start rolling in. Start writing, Weld County. This is your opinion page, and we want to hear from you.

Theresa Myers is the sections editor at The Tribune.
