Last night was a night of firsts.
I celebrated my first comfortable, fluid crossover while circling the track without falling. It looks so simple when everyone else does it. I however, felt like a knock-kneed camel on ice. That first crossover was a giant leap. I did a few more and was feeling pretty good about myself when I almost biffed it (I’m getting pretty good at ALMOST falling), because I got distracted thinking of what Derby would be like in zero gravity. We could have The Space Babes verses The Apollo Landers in a faceoff on the moon, maybe in a giant crater. You never know, it could happen.
Another first was our very first major injury. Veda Vu fell and broke her arm. I saw her go down – all of her weight landed on that one arm. At that point, the first thing that went through my mind was “Houston we have a problem” – it’s bad, I know. Perhaps Derby would be good in zero gravity. She was true to form…no complaining from this Derby chick…we were all proud of her – tough in the face of adversity (or a broken arm), which is at the core of Derby.
Yet another first would be this. My first blog entry. To be honest, my reason for not having written before is two-fold. One being that I remembered at odd times. It’s like remembering to return a phone call. I only remember when I’m in the shower or driving to work – both rather inappropriate time to use the phone, especially when one has barely controlled road rage at 8am on 10th Street, as I do. Most mornings. The other reason being that I’m a bit intimidated after reading first Amy’s and then Kristy’s entries. Infinitely funnier than me. I’ll just apologize now for boring you senseless and I promise to try to make this more entertaining.
So, here’s to firsts, zero gravity and a great sense of humor.
Note to self: Try not to land on your arm next time you fall. And yes, there will be a next time (nod).
