Battling a continued slide in enrollment, University of Northern Colorado trustees are considering a 9.5 percent tuition increase to balance the 2009 budget.

UNC officials predict a 5 percent decline in overall enrollment this fall, compounding a 5.5 percent overall drop last fall. UNC was hardest hit in first-year freshmen admissions last fall, which declined 10.5 percent from the previous year.

The proposed tuition hike for 2008-09, an across-the-board increase for resident and non-resident students, follows this year’s 9.9 percent increase for resident students and 2.7 percent for nonresidents. The University of Colorado raised tuition 9.3 percent for in-state students and Colorado State University is considering a 9.5 percent in-state hike for next school year.

Colorado ranks 49th in the nation in state support of higher education, according to a recent report released by the State Higher Education Executive Officers.

UNC President Kay Norton said that although the Legislature boosted UNC funding 7.9 percent for next year, "it's completely offset by the decline in enrollment and that's a huge challenge for all of us."
