A smooth-sailing trip to the Class 3A State Track and Field Championships for Valley's Amanda Boro and Katie Chrisp was aided in part by a strong tailwind on Saturday.
The pair finished first and second in the 100 meters, with Boro clocking in at 13.15 seconds and Chrisp right behind at 13.17. That was a far cry from the seed times each brought into the meet, with Chrisp coming in at 13.64 and Boro at 13.74.
So no doubt, the 35 to 40 mile-per-hour winds that blew to the south at the 3A District 2 meet at Eaton's Leslie R. Leake Stadium made a difference in those times. But nobody needs to know that.
"It's OK," Boro said. "We can tell people we made that time without the wind."
The constant gusts played a factor in every aspect of Saturday's meet. The winds got so strong at one point that the pole vault wasn't only postponed, but the padding in the vault pit was blown up and over the fence on the south side of the stadium. Meet officials rescheduled the event for Monday, weather permitting.
The biggest toll it took was on the middle- and long-distance runners, who spent half of their race running into the wing before getting a relief running down the backstretch. Some runners who had prequalified for state in their respective events opted not to run in the district meet for fear of injury.
At one point, wind variance got up as high as a 9.3 reading. Anything close to 3.0 is considered high.
Valley's girls, regardless of the wind, were dominant in the running events and sailed to a lead in the team standings with 133 points. Brush finished second at 122.5, Eaton third at 120.5, and each could surpass Valley in the team standings when their pole vaulters compete on Monday.
Lindsey Hubbard of Valley, who had already prequalified for state in the 100 and 200, didn't run in the finals after posting a preliminary time of 12.78, won the 200 by nearly a second in 26.45 and took first in the 300 hurdles in 47.52. Alyssa Sinner of Platte Valley won the 1,600 in a slow 5:57.02 and took first in the 3,200 in 13:00.26.
The Platte Valley boys, thanks in part to first-place finished in the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays, has wrapped up the team title with 162.5 points. Brush is second with 100, followed by Eaton (86.5) and Yuma (86). Meet results won't become official until all events have been completed.
Platte Valley's Brad Madison and Kalvin Ratzlaff finished 1-2 in the 100, with Madison winning with a wind-aided time of 11.16. Madison also won the 200 in 22.94, with the wind reading reaching 8.9 during the race.
Highland's Mat Mathiason coasted to a victory in the 110 hurdles, winning in 14.96 seconds with a wind reading of 8.5 at his back, and took the 300 hurdles in a no-so-fast 41.57. Platte Valley's first-place performances in five field events also helped the Broncos prevail, highlighted by a first-place leap of 20 feet, 1 1/2 inches in the long jump by Everardo DelaCruz.
