The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved a $300 billion Farm Bill Thursday afternoon ensuring a showdown over a probable presidential veto.
The U.S. House passed the bill Wednesday afternoon with enough votes to override a presidential veto and the Senate followed suit Thursday, with 81 Senators voting in favor of the bill and only 15 dissenting. Four Senators didn't vote. They include all three remaining presidential candidates — Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz.; Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.; and Barack Obama, D-Ill. — and Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass. The Senate needs 67 votes to override a presidential veto.
Colorado's Senate delegation, Sens. Wayne Allard and Ken Salazar, both voted yes on the bill, which now goes to President George Bush. Bush has said he thinks the bill is too generous to rich farmers and is prepared to veto the bill.
