A pilot who had engine trouble Saturday afternoon in south Weld County was able to land his plane and get out safely, but then the plane caught fire and burned.
Weld County Undersheriff Margie Martinez said Mark Johnson, 58, of Broomfield was the pilot of the plane and took off from Jeffco Airport in the Denver area. He began having engine problems, and finally landed in a field near Weld County roads 18 and 39, about five miles northwest of Hudson.
“His plane was damaged as he landed and ran into an irrigation ditch,” Martinez said. “The pilot walked away, but apparently some fuel from the plane caught fire.”
The extent of the damage to the plane was not known, but the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident.
