What to do with large losses
Contact your mortgage company and advise them of loss and ask them about their procedures for handling claim drafts.
Put newspaper delivery on hold if you will not be living in your home. Consider contacting Post Office and having your mail held or forwarded to new temporary address. Continue to pay your mortgage payment as usual. Policy provides for temporary living expenses under additional living expense (ALE) coverage but it does not provide coverage for payment of mortgage. Continue to pay utility bills. Contact telephone, internet service provider, etc. and inquire about transferring service to new temporary location. Consider putting hold on trash pickup service. Your contractor will probably place dumpster at your house for construction debris. If your personal identification information may have been lost consider taking proactive measures to guard your identification such as contacting credit card Company, changing accounts, etc. Secure your house after the loss and ask your neighbors and police department to watch your house as houses typically become more of a target for burglary when they are vacant. During lawn watering season, if you no longer have water at your house, make arrangements to water lawn, trees, etc. The policy provides limited coverage for fire damage to trees, shrubs, and other plants, but it does not provide coverage if they die because they are not watered. Contact cable TV or satellite provider. If your receiver, dish was damaged inquire about if you will be responsible to pay for it or if they replace for you. Remove from house as soon as it is safe jewelry, cash, firearms, sentimental personal property, any high dollar personal property. If jewelry needs to be cleaned of smoke smell take it to the jeweler of your choice for cleaning. Be careful to not take personal property to your temporary house as you do not want to contaminant it with smoke smell. Please do not dispose of any personal property until we can inspect it and reach an agreement as to if it is restorable or a total loss. — Source: State Farm Insurance |
