Judge: No mini-opening statements in priest's indecent exposure trial

Print Comment
Jury selection is underway in the trial of a priest charged with indecent exposure.

The Rev. Robert Whipkey, 53, is charged with indecent exposure for jogging naked in June 2007 in Frederick, according to police.

Whipkey, whose profession will not be mentioned in the trial, appeared this morning in court wearing a light blue button down shirt and khakis.

There will be no mini-opening statements in the case, after an objection by the defense citing intense media coverage was upheld by Weld District Judge Timothy Kerns. Instead jurors will simply be read the charges.

A final jury isn’t expected until tomorrow, as the trial will stop at noon today.

This story was corrected on June 12 to represent changes to mini-opening statements, which were incorrectly reported as opening statements.
