Two young Fort Lupton children died Saturday night after a head-on traffic crash on the eastern edge of Fort Lupton.
Cindy Tran, 5, and her sibling, Kelly Tran, 4, were killed in the crash that occurred about 9:30 p.m. at Colo. 52 and Roland Avenue, said Fort Lupton Police Chief Ron Grannis.
A white Toyota, driven by Lisa Hood, 33, of Fort Lupton was traveling west into the city on Colo. 52. Her vehicle crossed the center line for unknown reasons and collided head-on with a silver Toyota mini-van heading east on the highway.
The van was driven by Chau Tran, 40, of Fort Lupton. His wife, Zhanzg Zhen, 40, was also in the mini-van.
After the crash, witnesses had stopped to help when a silver Honda SUV driven by Donald Sittner of Walsenburg came over the crest of a hill and crashed into the white Toyota.
Hood was trapped in her white Toyota, and the Fort Lupton Fire Department had to extricate her. It took firefighters 30 minutes to remove her. She was transported to North Colorado Medical Center and underwent emergency surgery. She was in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Chau Tran was transported by helicopter, and Zhen was transported by ambulance. Both are in stable condition at NCMC.
Sittner was uninjured, although his wife, Jeanne, also in his car, was treated at Platte Valley Hospital.
It appears that all were wearing seat belts.
Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash, Grannis said.
The two deaths are Nos. 22 and 23 on Weld County roads this year compared to 26 at this same time last year.
